Yes. Dragon Ball Super: Beerus is an enhanced retelling of the original Dragon Ball Super TV anime, beginning with the Beerus story. It revisits the encounter that first appeared in the 2013 movie Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods. If you finished the original Super and want the story that comes next, the separate project to look for is The Galactic Patrol.

We checked official sources on November 4, 2026. This guide is spoiler-free.

Is Dragon Ball Super: Beerus a remake or a remaster?

Toei Animation calls Beerus an enhanced edition. The studio describes new shots, revisions to existing scenes, re-rendered footage, new voice recording, additional music and sound effects, and changes to how the story is put together. “Enhanced retelling” is a useful shorthand because the changes go beyond picture quality and still build on the earlier anime.

If you already know the story, watch for what the editing asks you to pay attention to. A scene can feel different when a cut arrives earlier, when the music drops out, or when a reaction gets room to breathe. Those are useful things to compare even when you remember where the fight is headed. Toei’s announcement

How does Beerus relate to Battle of Gods?

Battle of Gods introduced Beerus in a 2013 theatrical movie. The original Dragon Ball Super adapted and expanded that encounter into its opening saga. The 2026 Beerus series revisits that opening in the enhanced TV edition. You can recognize the same premise in all three without treating them as three successive adventures. Crunchyroll’s guide to Beerus

Title How it fits When to start here
Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods (2013) The theatrical version of Goku’s first encounter with Beerus You want the encounter in one movie
Dragon Ball Super (2015) The original TV run, which expands the Beerus story in its opening saga You want to start the original series from episode 1
Dragon Ball Super: Beerus (2026) The enhanced TV edition, starting with the same encounter You want the version airing now or want to see what Toei changed

Do you need to watch Battle of Gods before Beerus?

You can start with episode 1 of Dragon Ball Super: Beerus. The anime sets up Beerus’s awakening and his interest in Goku. Knowing how Dragon Ball Z ends gives you some context for the quiet period at the start. The film is optional because the new series covers the encounter itself.

If you’ve seen the movie and want to revisit the story, give the series an episode before you decide whether to stick with it. The movie is there when you want the whole encounter in one sitting. The series gives you a different way to follow it and something to compare with friends who remember the film. Crunchyroll’s series listing

Is Beerus the same as The Galactic Patrol?

Beerus returns to the beginning of Super. The Galactic Patrol is the separately announced anime that follows the original TV run’s Universe Survival Arc. If you remember finishing that arc and want to continue from there, keep an eye on The Galactic Patrol. Official Dragon Ball announcement

Keep each version straight when you watch with friends

Say which title and episode you’ve reached before comparing scenes. “I’m through episode 3 of the 2026 series” gives everyone a clearer spoiler boundary than “I’ve seen the Beerus part.” If one friend only remembers the film, ask what they thought of the scenes you’ve both reached before bringing up anything later. Our guide to watching at the same pace as friends has more ways to set that boundary.
